Calculate the profit or loss on a long or short trade in any market, including fees and the percentage return.
How profit and loss is calculated
- Long: (exit minus entry) × quantity minus fees.
- Short: (entry minus exit) × quantity minus fees.
- Return percent = result ÷ (entry × quantity) × 100.
Worked example
You buy 50 shares at 100 and sell at 110 with 5 dollars in fees. Profit = (110 minus 100) × 50 minus 5 = 495 dollars, a 9.9 percent return on 5,000 dollars.
For leveraged products, the return on your margin will be larger than the return shown here, in both directions. Check your margin with the margin calculator.
