Work out how many forex lots to trade based on your account balance, risk percent, stop distance in pips and pip value.
How the lot size calculator works
This tool turns your risk plan into a lot size you can enter on your trading platform.
Formula
- Risk amount = balance × risk percent.
- Lots = risk amount ÷ (stop in pips × pip value per standard lot).
Worked example
A 10,000 dollar account risks 1 percent, or 100 dollars. The stop is 25 pips on EUR/USD, where one standard lot is worth 10 dollars per pip. Lots = 100 ÷ (25 × 10) = 0.40 lots, or 4 mini lots.
Not sure about the pip value? Use the pip value calculator first.
Frequently asked questions
What lot size should I use?
The size that limits your loss to your planned risk if the stop is hit. This calculator works it out for you.
What is 0.01 lots?
A micro lot, or 1,000 units of the base currency.
Does a wider stop mean a smaller lot size?
Yes. To keep the same dollar risk, a wider stop requires a smaller position.
