What is Strategy (MicroStrategy)?

MicroStrategy was founded in 1989 by Michael Saylor and Sanju Bansal as a business software company. In August 2020 it began buying Bitcoin as its main treasury asset, funded by cash, debt and new shares. In February 2025 it renamed itself Strategy.

The company still sells analytics software, but its stock price now depends mainly on the value of its Bitcoin holdings and how much investors pay above that value.

What moves the Strategy (MicroStrategy) price?

  • Bitcoin price: The value of its holdings is the main driver.
  • Premium to holdings: The gap between market value and Bitcoin value changes with sentiment.
  • Capital raising: New share and debt sales fund more Bitcoin buying.
  • Index inclusion: It joined the Nasdaq 100 in December 2024.
  • Accounting rules: Fair value accounting makes quarterly profits swing with Bitcoin.

How Strategy (MicroStrategy) moves in Elliott Wave terms

MSTR often moves two to three times as much as Bitcoin. Its waves follow Bitcoin's structure closely, but extensions are larger. Corrections of 50 percent or more have happened within Bitcoin bull markets.

Use the Bitcoin count to frame MSTR, and watch for divergence when the premium shrinks.

Tips for counting Strategy (MicroStrategy) waves

Compare with Bitcoin and watch capital raise announcements. Quarterly earnings reports often start or end a wave. Price gaps after results can skip over levels, so place stops with gaps in mind.
